BMW Group and Vattenfall have started a new research project on the secondary use of high-voltage EV batteries using batteries from the MINI E and the BMW ActiveE as stationary power storage.

This system can enable energy produced from solar panels to be used more efficiently. In 2011, batteries which were previously used in the MINI E test fleet were successfully implemented in a stationary project. This approach minimizes energy waste, effectively reducing energy costs on a day-to-day basis.

The benefit to PG&E of more efficient use of existing power grid resources through EV charging management is passed on in the form of monetary incentives to program participants. At the end of a vehicle’s life, these batteries still have at least 70% of their original storage capacity available, making them suitable for re-use.

As of May 2012, ActiveE drivers can install solar panels on their homes for a discount of approximately 35%. The feedback from customers testing the MINI E and the BMW ActiveE will be fed directly into series production of the BMW i3. 700 BMW ActiveEs are on the road in the US, mostly in private hands.
