Some makers suggest hydrogen fuel cells will be the way to go; the most promising application seems to be long-haul trucking with few or no stops. The LIGHTS team found that, once acquired, the electric truck had significantly lower operating costs per mile—but that didn’t make up for the higher purchase cost.

Infrastructure to be deployed includes three CNG stations, one combined B20/CNG/Electric station, one L/CNG station, one hydrogen station, and seven electric chargers. Total DOE award: $14,983,167.

The primary customers right now are the ports—Port of Long Beach, Port of Los Angeles­—and the ports around the country are usually in urban environments. Therefore, a lot of electric and hydrogen vehicles are being brought into that market quickly. Every one of the major OEMs is launching an electric truck series.
