BMW is using the upcoming IAA in Frankfurt to showcase four production BMW brand plug-in hybrid models from different vehicle segments—one newly announced. BMW eDrive is the new drive system technology used in all the electrically powered vehicles from BMW i and the plug-in hybrid models from BMW.

BMW presented the extensively updated new editions of its Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) for the luxury segment. The refreshed drive system line-up includes new combustion engines, a latest-generation plug-in hybrid system for the BMW X5 xDrive50e and 48V mild hybrid technology for all other models.

Also part of the line-up at the BMW stand will be the new BMW 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid, the BMW M550i xDrive, and the BMW 6 Series model range. BMW will stage the world premiere of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the US premiere of the BMW Concept X2 at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in January in Detroit.

The Italian supercar maker Lamborghini has abandoned any plans to use a plug-in hybrid powertrain in its sports cars in the near future. But instead it’s doubling down on the technology, and looking to use it where it might be best appreciated by the market: in its upcoming Urus sport-utility vehicle.

The BMW XM is equipped with a plug-in hybrid system comprising a V8 gasoline engine and electric motor that delivers combined fuel consumption of 1.6 – 1.5 It is underpinned by a newly developed, classically high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. The BMW XM is also the first BMW M original since the BMW M1.

Stroll said recently that consumer demand for electric cars “is not what we thought it was two years ago” and, as a result, will use hybrid powertrains as a “bridging” technology on the path to full electrification between 2025 and 2030. It will also launch the mid-engined Valhalla supercar, its first plug-in hybrid, later this year.
