But, as it turns out, the actual effects on the power grid of an electromagnetic pulse in outer space are strongly determined by the three-dimensional distribution of rocks beneath our feet.

Following the start of the project in September 2015, a redox flow battery system (2 MW x 4 hours) was constructed for a power grid at a substation in San Diego. Demonstration will now be carried out to evaluate the management of surplus electricity and regulation of grid frequency and voltage fluctuation.

The project is supported by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), in cooperation with the State of Hawaii, Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc., On Maui, 15% of the electricity supply is already generated by renewable energy, and there are plans to increase this percentage going forward.

Li-ion battery maker A123 Systems will supply a Grid Battery System (GBS) to Maui Electric Company (MECO), a utility serving residents and businesses on the islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai in Hawaii. The system, NSTAR’s first battery energy storage project, is proposed for installation at a substation in Medway, Mass.

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is a member of a team that was recently awarded a $7-million contract from the US Army Corps of Engineers to demonstrate integration of electric vehicles, generators and solar arrays to supply emergency power for Fort Carson, Colo. Demonstration (JCTD) called the Smart Power Infrastructure.

There are at least a half dozen different technologies to power cars with electricity under construction. Better Place is building stations in San Francisco, Hawaii, Israel, and Denmark to swap out 1,000 pound batteries in a car wash type set up. The electricity for recharging has to come from somewhere, which means power plants.

A key thing, he said, will be to recharge the batteries at an acceptable time for the electricity grid — to “make sure people aren’t charging at the very peak, peak time,” like late afternoon when the electricity grid is already weighted down by demands like air conditioning.
