Lux: VW “actually in a strong position to innovate their way out of this mess”

VW was slowly moving beyond conventional gasoline and diesel engines anyway, Lux noted, with plans of putting out 20 more plug-in vehicles by 2020 ( earlier post )—such as the production version of the Audi e-tron quattro. Volkswagen has also invested in next-generation batteries, including lithium-sulfur and solid-state.

The three winning companies are: Umpqua Energy , a startup company based in Medford, Oregon, is using an Argonne National Laboratory technology to develop a system that allows a gasoline engine to operate in an extreme lean burn mode in order to increase gasoline mileage.
