Existing oil suppliers and gas-station operators don’t seem keen to push into the fuel-cell era, especially since there’s barely any hydrogen vehicles on the road now. Put this in a car and you have a fuel-cell electric vehicle. Since electrolysis equipment only requires water and electricity, there’s more flexibility in placement.

The Ioniq Hybrid boasts the highest fuel economy in the US (up to 58 mpg) for a non-plug-in vehicle and the Ioniq Electric is the industry’s most efficient EV (136 mpge).

Hyundai staged the global debut of its i-flow diesel hybrid concept car at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Hyundai’s first diesel-electric hybrid powertrain uses the new U2 1.7-liter liter engine augmented by two-stage turbocharging and Hyundai’s Lithium Ion-Polymer battery partnered with a six-speed, dual-clutch transmission.

Proponents believe such a car could be easily refuelled with hydrogen and assumed it would have greater range than a pure all-electric car. Little seems developed in any wide commercial sense and certainly not to the extent of the pure electric car. It is important to realize that a fuel cell car is actually an electric car.
