Liquid Metal Battery Corporation (LMBC), a Cambridge, Massachusetts company founded in 2010 to develop new forms of electric storage batteries that work in large, grid-scale applications, has secured the rights to key patent technology from MIT. Patents for all liquid metal battery inventions were licensed from MIT.

In July 2011, LMBC, which has France-based Total and Bill Gates as investors, secured the rights to key patent technology invented by Sadoway and Bradwell. Sectioned Mg||Sb liquid metal battery operated at 700 °C showing the three stratified liquid phases upon cooling to room temperature. The cell was filled with epoxy prior to sectioning.
