As we wait for Congress to fully return from their recess and vote on various legislation, I continue to be extremely concerned about how as much as $10 billion in federal government grants will be be spent on EV charging infrastructure. In short, I’m predicting what I call the “overcharging of America.”.

GM announced that the first buyers of the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended-range capability will be eligible for one of 4,400 free home charging stations. The program will provide Volt owners with a 240-volt charge station from either ECOtality, Inc. or Coulomb Technologies.

Purchasers of a Chevrolet Volt who qualify for EV Project participation in the Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston areas will receive a free home charger and credit toward the installation of the charger. The EV Project began last year, with grant funding through the US Department of Energy from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Some of those units are being paid for by a California Energy Commission grant to upgrade existing Avcon charging stations across California. Instead, the Department of the Environment has opted to utilize a federal grant to Coulomb Technologies' ChargePoint America to pay to upgrade these charge stations. What's the problem?

(A Fully funded, the ChargePoint America program would cost $37 million, with some of the shortfall for the actual station installations being addressed, the organizers hope, through state and local grants.&#.
