Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) showcased the utility’s first extended-range electric truck with manufacturer VIA Motors at three Bay Area National Plug-In Day events—in SanFrancisco, San Rafael and Cupertino—on Sunday. The gasoline engine extends the range to 350 more miles.
Relevant plug-in vehicles that drive customer demand and are connected; Enabling technologies like advanced batteries and sophisticated software controls; A capable/green grid; and, Plug-in ready communities with supporting policies. Mark Duvall of EPRI said the grid would be able to handle “ as many [plug-ins] as you want. ”
The industry needs to continue to overcome the obstacles of extendedrange, price and impact on the grid if we’re going to be able to deliver a better experience than what consumers currently get. Inside the car, Better Place manages the vehicle’s energy plan through an on-board computing platform, code-named “AutOS.”
The general principle for bidirectional charging is EVs can either feed power from a charged vehicle back into the house (vehicle-to-home or V2H) or interact with the electric grid itself (vehicle-to-grid or V2G). Maybe it's not out of necessity that you don't have access to the grid,” Andersen says.
We noted in December that the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE, was working to update standards for the interface between plug-in electric cars and the grid, and planned to agree on a set within months. And for this ecosystem to be robust, there must be commonality, especially when owners are plugging into the electrical grid.
At present, PHEV technology alone is equipped to improve the current electric grid. The car can refuel during periods of low demand on the grid, and if equipped with a bi-directional charger, can actually replenish the grid with excess energy gleaned from a renewable resource.
