Mayor of London: all new London taxis will need to be zero-emission capable from 2018

The Mayor confirmed his plan at Transport for London’s (TfL’s) “New Taxis for London” event, at which he met five manufacturers developing zero emission capable taxis—Frazer-Nash, Nissan, Karsan, London Taxi Company and Mercedes-Benz. Around 3,000 of the most polluting taxis have also been removed from the London fleet.

Range-extended electric Metrocab licensed to carry fare-paying passengers in London

The taxi is driven by two 50 kW (peak) electric motors, range-extended with a Euro-5 1-liter gasoline engine coupled with a generator to recharge the 12.2 kWh battery pack (which takes as little as 10 minutes while driving). Peak wheel torque is 2 x 1,400 N·m (1,033 lb-ft).
