Ports have been a major source of water and air pollution in the US, but remained relatively unregulated until recent years.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) will award $20 million to ten new research and development projects that will advance hydrogen production and delivery technologies: six on hydrogen production and four on hydrogen delivery. million to develop a reactor for hydrogen production from bio-derived liquids.

A recent project demonstrated a 100 kW fuel cell generator with 72 kg of hydrogen storage for marine applications. The generator was designed and built by Hydrogenics with safety and regulatory reviews by the Hydrogen Safety Panel, US Coast Guard, and the American Bureau of Shipping.

Funded by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the project FlyZero began in early 2021 as an intensive research project investigating zero-carbon emission commercial flight. Its main advantages are that it only emits water and eliminates all other exhaust emissions (CO 2 , NO x , particulates).
