In Germany, Mercedes-Benz Cars has eight vehicle and powertrain plants (Bremen, Rastatt, Sindelfingen, Berlin, Hamburg, Kamenz, Kölleda, Stuttgart-Untertürkheim), which either purchase electricity or operate their own power plants. Already existing highly efficient gas CHP systems additionally generate local heat and power at the factories.

announced that Continental Automotive Systems’ Maxwell-powered voltage stabilization system (VSS) will be a standard feature on 2016. Maxwell’s ultracapacitors, in Continental’s VSS design, also serve as an additional power source for stabilizing the vehicle’s electrical system during periods of high power demand.

The idea is that when your car needs more energy, you can drive your car into a station and, like an automated car wash, your depleted battery is replaced robotically by one that has a full charge. Currently, there are some industrial facilities that use battery swapping to replenish the energy stores of electric forklifts.
