GE Transportation introduced the newest line of fuel efficient and low emissions Evolution Series locomotives, the Model ES44C4. The new model, which is part of GE’s ecomagination program, delivers a cleaner, faster, safer and more reliable alternative to the aging North American fleet of DC-powered locomotives. The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates in the April 2010 release of its Short-Term Energy and Summer Fuels Outlook that CO 2 emissions from fossil fuels, which declined by 6.6% However, even with increases in 2010 and 2011, projected CO 2 emissions in 2011 are lower than annual emissions from 1999 through 2008.

The results of an independent head-to-head fuel test between GE’s Evolution ES44AC and EMD’s SD70ACe Tier 2 emissions-compliant locomotives found that GE’s locomotives are more than 6% more fuel-efficient compared to their EMD counterparts. Moving freight by rail compared to trucks reduces fuel use, emissions and highway congestion.

Although the recovery in the world economy since 2009 has been uneven, and future economic prospects remain uncertain, global primary energy demand rebounded by a remarkable 5% in 2010, pushing CO 2 emissions to a new high. The largest increase in oil production comes from Iraq, followed by Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Kazakhstan and Canada.
