NREL study finds gasoline hybrid delivery trucks substantially reduce emissions and beat or maintain fuel economy compared to diesel vehicles

Green Car Congress

NREL’s Fleet Test and Evaluation Team recently completed a year-long technology evaluation of gasoline hybrid electric (gHEV) FedEx Express delivery trucks compared with conventional diesel vehicles. On a drive cycle representing routes with frequent stops and accelerations, the gHEV trucks exhibited a 20% improvement in fuel economy.

Interim NREL Report on In-Use Azure Balance Gasoline Hybrids in FedEx Fleet Finds Substantially Lower Tailpipe Emissions, Similar Fuel Economy to Diesels

Green Car Congress

Fuel economy was similar between the gHEVs and diesel vehicles, except for the highest kinetic intensity drive cycle where the hybrid exhibited ~20% higher fuel economy. NREL used six similar trucks for the evaluation project: three Azure Dynamics Balance hybrids, and three diesels (Freightliner MT-45).

Victoria Launches Australias First Trial of Hybrid-Electric Buses; Series and Parallel

Green Car Congress

It is estimated this hybrid-electric technology will provide a saving of around 20 per cent on fuel and greenhouse gas emissions compared to a conventional diesel bus. Economic impacts will be assessed by evaluating the fuel and maintenance performance of the vehicles over an extended period of 12 months in service.

Finally, looking at the non-electric fuel, instead of using gasoline for long-trips, PHEVs could run on bio-diesel, cellulose ethanol, or other bio-fuels to further reduce greenhouse gases. If we optimistically assume the average US fuel economy is 25 miles per gallon, at $3.00 Using the average U.S.
