Since I was attending the Detroit Auto Show, I could replicate my UK trip for comparison. My goal was to head north to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, then west to Fargo, ND, and back to Detroit via Iowa. Currently the only other cars with an 800-volt systems are the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT.

Audi e-Tron GT – the BEV guts of the regular e-Tron (also shared with Porsche’s Taycan) in a coupe-inspired four-door body. Look out Porsche Macan! Expect to see it Down Under in 2023.

Chevy already previewed an all-electric compact crossover and a pickup truck, and announced in April that it would build an all-electric Silverado with an estimated 400 miles of rated range at its Factory Zero EV assembly plant in Detroit. We’d happily drive a Bolt EUV as our daily vehicle, presuming we had a home charging station.

The electricity for recharging has to come from somewhere, which means power plants. While Id been harsh on the need for outside recharge stations in the past, actually an intermediate charge may extend battery life. Then I recall that my laptop batteries barely ever last four years. Does that bother you?
