Among electric vehicles from automakers that report specific sales numbers for their EV models, the Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV was tops in the US in 2021 with 27,3707 units sold. Perhaps at the top of the list of trends from our Scoreboard is how well the two PHEVs from Toyota sold. 4 was only beginning to reach US dealers.

4 and Volvo XC 40 Recharge had “off the chart” sales increases in Q2 over Q1 due to the simple fact that both vehicles really began arriving at dealers in small volumes in Q1. Japan was a distant second with the Prius Prime and RAV4 Prime PHEVs from Toyota accounting for a majority of the sales. in Q2 over Q1.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. The easiest conversions are for 2004-2008 Prius (not 2001-2003 Prius) and the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner Hybrid. Drivers of converted cars have received high levels of cooperation from dealer service departments so far.

This means EVs like the Mustang Mach-E which is assembled in Mexico, and the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid (PHEV) which is assembled in Canada, would qualify. EVs from Tesla and GM currently do not qualify for the tax credit and Toyota reached the 200,000 sales threshold in Q2 and I’m forecasting that Ford will reach the threshold this quarter.

EVAdoption Analysis: The next automakers most likely to reach 200,000 EV unit sales in the US are Toyota, Ford, and Nissan in 2022 and 2023.
