Michigan-based Azure began work on its collaborative agreement to deliver the pure battery-electric powertrain for the Transit Connect in the US and Canada in October 2009 following the end of Ford’s partnership with Smith Electric Vehicles US on that project ( earlier post ). A plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle also to be introduced in 2013.

Ford is creating Ford Ion Park, a global center of battery excellence comprising more than 150 experts in battery chemistries, testing, manufacturing and value-chain management who will boost battery range and lower costs to customers and Ford. This does seem to be some progress especially with cell manufacturing, focus on software etc.
