Although much cheaper than putting gasoline into a ICE car, charging an EV is not necessarily free. With the rise of EVs, there’s a shift toward kWh-based pricing , which aligns more closely with the conventional model of gasoline refueling. In Iowa , the kWh tax has already been in effect since July 1, 2023.

That meant looking for a decent public DC charging station in a nearby town. My goal was to head north to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, then west to Fargo, ND, and back to Detroit via Iowa. Instead, I drove to Cleveland and then back westward to the center of Iowa, where I visited a relative. The highest I experienced was 218 kW.
