Veteran automakers, oil companies, and federal and state governments have been both the prime movers and obstacles to plug-in cars in the past and they remain so today. The plan calls for 39 mpg for cars and 30 mpg for light trucks and SUVs by 2016; no automaker lawsuits; and California subscribes to the national program through 2016.

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) USA unveiled the FT-CH dedicated hybrid concept at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. Within the next 10 to 20 years, we will not only reach peak oil we will enter a period where demand for all liquid fuels will exceed supply. Toyota believes these are hurdles that will be cleared.

How does this sound: 100+ MPG in a regular vehicle? For people looking for the most effective way to end our addiction to oil, PHEVs have made sense because carmakers can build them now, with todays technology and using todays infrastructure. At $3 for a gallon of gas, driving a non-hybrid car costs 8-20 cents/mile (depending on MPG).

However, its overall merits are open for debate after a study by UC Davis transportation economist Christopher Knittel questioned the implied costs of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Of course any upward momentum is to be welcomed and Congress has now approved a further $2billion as an emergency top-up for the programme (see article ).

Several global indicators on the supply of oil and the known carbon pollution environmental damages its caused all lead us to find cleaner ways of transportation. You also repeat the "peak oil" argument that Ive been reading since the 60s. We have oil! Toyota still has not made any money on the Prius.
