A study by researchers at the University of Texas found that in general, use of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) can lead to an increase in ozone during nighttime hours (due to decreased scavenging from both vehicles and EGU stacks) and a decrease in ozone during daytime hours. The results are less clear in Dallas and Houston.

Their paper, to be published in the summer issue of the journal Issues in Science and Technology , is based on their earlier study that found that strategies to promote adoption of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) with small battery packs offer more social benefits (i.e., Earlier post.).

In the putt-putt lane on Blue Highway 121 en route to the home NTEAA Presidential Couple, John and Nancy Brecher, while bucking a strong headwind at 82-degree temperature, the "Spirit" moved on down the line as follows: 74.9MPG for 19 miles; 66.5 miles for roughly 53.3MPG to Garland, Texas. for 28; 59.1 1869 = $14.62 for starters!

These vehicles take currently available gasoline-hybrid vehicles to the next level, allowing drivers to plug them in for a few hours to charge the batteries and then drive emissions free solely on electric power for 35-60 miles. The cost of charging the battery of a PHEV is estimated to be just 50-75 cents per gallon equivalent.

The plug-in hybrid vehicle the “Spirit of DC" was designed to run on electricity alone for about 10 miles before reverting back to acting like an ordinary hybrid. Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle All Around America (PHEV3A) tour with "EVJerry" Asher driving started last year on Earth Day, in front of the Nation’s Capitol.
