Texas study finds PHEV use could increase ozone at night, decrease ozone during the day

A study by researchers at the University of Texas found that in general, use of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) can lead to an increase in ozone during nighttime hours (due to decreased scavenging from both vehicles and EGU stacks) and a decrease in ozone during daytime hours. The results are less clear in Dallas and Houston.

Texas State Senator Proposes $4,000 State Subsidy for PHEV Buyers

Texas state Senator Kip Averitt, R-Waco has filed an omnibus clean-air and energy bill that would give a $4,000 state subsidy to plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) buyers. Rafael Anchia, D-Dallas is pushing a measure to replace the state’s fleet of vehicles with plug-in hybrids if they prove to be cost effective. Houston Chronicle.

The CSAs in Seattle-Tacoma, Denver-Aurora and Dallas-Ft. Respondents included 15,079 owners of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Lauderdale Combined Statistical Area (CSA) had the worst experience in this regard, with 35% of visits failing to result in charging.
