Electric car supporters are rising to defend General Motors’ development of the Chevy Volt after the Obama Administration’s automotive task force proclaimed that the car was probably too expensive to be commercially successful in the near future. At current transportation battery prices, that is well beyond the cost of spinning reserve. On the other hand, the cost of a used transportation battery will be set by the next cheapest form of scalable dispatchable storage such as air pressure storage less the battery recycle value. And, if you consider lifetime costs of owning an EV versus owning a traditional internal combustion car, even if the initial purchase price of the EV is much more than your combustion car and you have to replace a battery for $4,000 after 7-10 years, the EV still costs less to operate. It is simply the cost of doing business.
