The list of electric vehicles qualified for the EV tax credit in calendar year 2024 has been released. And as anticipated by automakers in recent weeks, the Chevrolet Blazer EV and Cadillac Lyriq don’t yet make the list, while the Ford Mustang Mach-E is for now completely disqualified. Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At these prices, people are buying the "environmental feature" -- they want to be among the first owners of the worlds cleanest extended-range vehicles. They are early adopters, buying "Version 1.0" So far, most start as hybrids.

Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) rules are, as the name implies, based on an average fuel economy of all the vehicles a manufacturer sells. Some will be electric-only, others will be extended-range vehicles in which a gasoline engine will generate electricity on board after about 40 miles of driving on a fully charged battery.
