Symbio has integrated a 15 kW (net) fuel cell range extender in a Nissan e-NV200 electric van, with plans to introduce the vehicle to the European taxi market. The customized e-NV200 offers taxi drivers a similar total cost of ownership to a hybrid taxi, but with the range of an internal combustion engine.

Although the need to build a global clean energy supply network has been noted worldwide, there are constraints when it comes to transporting renewable energy in the form of electricity across long distances. Hydrogen gas, however, cannot be transported in large amounts due to the limitations in the amount that can be stored per unit volume.

If PHEVs became the major form of transportation, the use of fossil fuels would be cut dramatically. This is especially true in air, sea, and some ground transportation as well as in industrial processes. Since it can refuel from a standard household outlet and from a gasoline station, it needs no new infrastructure.
