The vehicles and infrastructure being funded include the use of natural and renewable gas, propane, ethanol, biodiesel, electricity, and hybrid technologies. The project will deploy 554 alternative fuel and hybrid electric vehicles and install 153 alternative fueling and electric vehicle charging stations throughout the Chicago region.

They are usually delivery vehicles working within a neighborhood, and are on the road for 6-8 hour a day and are recharged overnight. In May 2008, the Telegraph newspaper in the UK reported that British drivers paid 57 pence/liter or $2.99/ gallon of diesel in excise tax which doesn’t include the value added tax.

Darbee noted that although California has about 12% of the population, it has about 25% of the demand for plug-in hybrids. Berkeley will have a higher percentage than Fresno—it will not be unlikely for 3-5 PEVs to show up on one neighborhood circuit in Berkeley, overwhelming the local circuit, and leading to blackouts, he said.

Alternatively, may we suggest the sound of the neighborhood ice cream truck? This is especially important for electric and hybrid vehicles which can be difficult to hear at lower speeds due to their drive mechanism.
