In June about 500 cars were placed in consumer and fleet hands in Los Angeles and New York and New Jersey for what BMW calls a " field trial." The car is essentially a high-end conversion. As with many conversions, space is sacrificed for the battery box. Jeff U’Ren drove a Panasonic Lead Acid EV-1 for a few years.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At that point, we expect the aftermarket companies prices to have come down sufficiently so that their conversions will be attractive to owners of hundreds of thousands of hybrids already on the road. So far, most start as hybrids.

PbC batteries are multi-celled asymmetrically supercapacitive lead-acid-carbon hybrid batteries. Like a lead-acid battery, it comprises a series of cells. NS originally built NS-999 in early 2009 with lead–acid batteries; however, the lead–acid system consistently failed field testing.
