The project will deploy 502 alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles through 119 public and private fleets throughout the state. The project will result in expanded availability of alternative fuels with 17 new CNG and E85 fueling stations and 63 electric vehicle charging stations. Total DOE award: $15,000,000.

In June about 500 cars were placed in consumer and fleet hands in Los Angeles and New York and New Jersey for what BMW calls a " field trial." They produced a small fleet for the Munich Olympics in 1972. The car is essentially a high-end conversion. In the case of the electric Mini, that means no backseat.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At that point, we expect the aftermarket companies prices to have come down sufficiently so that their conversions will be attractive to owners of hundreds of thousands of hybrids already on the road. So far, most start as hybrids.
