ARPA-E awards $37M for IONICS projects; improving solid-state batteries and fuel cells

Green Car Congress

In particular, IONICS projects will work to improve energy storage and conversion technologies in three categories: transportation batteries, grid-level storage, and fuel cells. The University of Colorado Boulder will develop a chloride (Cl – ) conducting membrane that will greatly reduce the cost of an all-iron flow battery.

DOE reports progress on development of hydrogen storage technologies

Green Car Congress

For the near-term, the focus is on improving performance and lowering the cost of high-pressure compressed hydrogen storage systems. Related to this, DOE seeks by 2020 to develop novel precursors and conversion processes capable of reducing the high-volume cost of high-strength carbon fiber by 25% from $13 per pound to ~$9 per pound.

ARPA-E selects 33 projects for $66M in awards; advanced biocatalysts for gas-to-liquids and lightweight metals

Green Car Congress

While chemically converting natural gas to liquid fuels (GTL) is a proven technology that increases volumetric energy density, the current conversion approach through Fischer-Tropsch (FT-GTL) is challenged by both high capital costs and low conversion efficiencies.
