Lincoln’s premium hybrid is expected to deliver at least 41 mpg US (5.7 liter Atkinson-cycle I-4 hybrid engine, and earlier applied in the Fusion and Milan hybrid sedans. On our 60-mile drive in the Sportage Hybrid we averaged 45 mpg. Front-Wheel Drive (FWD). Liter Inline 4-cylinder, Gasoline. 8-speed automatic transmission.

On the heels officially introducing the Focus Electric last week ( earlier post ), Ford revealed two next-generation hybrids—including its first production plug-in hybrid (PHEV)—at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. This allows it to run in electric mode before using the gasoline engine.

That’s not surprising—the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, the company’s only previous plug-in hybrid, is a well-executed PHEV with an EPA-rated 32 miles of usable electric range that retains all the virtues of the Pacifica minivan. It was all-new for the 2018 model year, and was engineered from the start to accommodate 2021’s PHEV version.

Global annual sales of all plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are forecast to quadruple within three years from 218,000 in 2015 to 893,000 in 2018. By 2022, PHEV sales are predicted to climb to almost 3.3 l/100 km (147 mpg US) and combined cycle electrical consumption as low as 12.2 CO 2 emissions (combined), g/km.

Millions will plug-in their electric vehicles (EV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and fuel cell vehicles (FCV) at night when electricity is cheap, then plug-in during the day when energy is expensive and sell those extra electrons at a profit. Millions of EVs and PHEVs would expand the sale of electricity as an alternative to oil.
