Toyota unveiled the second iteration of its hydrogen fuel cell electric Class 8 truck ( earlier post ) during the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) Management Briefing Seminars in Northern Michigan. Project Portal 2.0 builds on the lessons learned from the launch of the Alpha vehicle in 2017.

Some makers suggest hydrogen fuel cells will be the way to go; the most promising application seems to be long-haul trucking with few or no stops. For fleet operators, concepts like demand charges and charging management software are entirely new. But today, heavy trucks remain a diesel world. That’s about to change.

The vans themselves are based on the concept Town and Country EV that was unveiled last Fall by Chrysler. However, because of the duty cycle used by the Postal Service, which generally amounts to only about 18-20 miles per day on a fixed route, these vehicles are being built without the range extender seen on the concept. Looks sharp.

Although charging infrastructure is beginning to find its way into cities, it may be awhile until they are available in residential neighborhoods en masse.
