A Concept ActiveE is in the background. The BMW Group has been gathering insights into the day-to-day use of electric vehicles since mid-2009, when it launched a global field test involving more than 600 MINI E models. During the test phase some 50 MINI E cars are also being delivered to customers in China in 2010.

The concept announced at EVS29 is the first market-ready home storage system using a second-life automotive BMW i3 high-voltage battery integrated by BECK Automation (Würzburg, Germany). In 2011, batteries which were previously used in the MINI E test fleet were successfully implemented in a stationary project.

The BMW Brilliance plug-in hybrid concept. have presented a concept plug-in hybrid sedan based on the long wheelbase version of the BMW 5 Series Sedan. The ultimate goal is the concept of a Megacity Vehicle, the BMW i3 that meets the demands of a sustainable mobility solution for congested urban areas. Ongoing field tests involving more than 600 MINI E cars, including 450 in the US, have already provided knowledge about the demands on future electrically powered production vehicles.
