Of the 11 PHEVs: 10 are extended range electric vehicles—Toyota’s concept Prius PHEV is the only non-series hybrid plug-in. 9 (82%) are production prototypes or concepts; only the Fisker Karma and Karma-S are in production or near production.

The Fisker Karma plug-in extended range electric vehicle ( earlier post ) made its public driving debut over the weekend, 19 months after being introduced as a concept. Behind the wheel was Fisker Automotive co-founder and COO Bernhard Koehler. Carbon emissions are also lower than today’s hybrids.

The Fisker Karma Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) ( earlier post ) will make its public driving debut during the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races on 15 August, 19 months after being unveiled as a concept car. It will be the first time a PHEV has appeared on track at the event. 260 hp (194 kW) Ecotec engine from GM.

The vans themselves are based on the concept Town and Country EV that was unveiled last Fall by Chrysler. However, because of the duty cycle used by the Postal Service, which generally amounts to only about 18-20 miles per day on a fixed route, these vehicles are being built without the range extender seen on the concept.
