President Obama announced the DOE “Clean Energy Grand Challenge” in March 2012 with the goal of enabling US companies to be the first in the world to produce plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) that are as affordable and convenient for the average American family as today’s gasoline-powered vehicles within the next 10 years.

The team anticipates at least a twofold productivity improvement over current levels and a cost that can be competitive with gasoline. The project also includes a proprietary process to convert waste biomass into carbon dioxide and hydrogen to feed the bioreactor, allowing butanol production from waste feedstocks.
