With two Electric cars, at the time a Nissan Lean and Mitsubishi Outlander, we use a considerable amount of electricity but not much petrol, so already we were a reasonable way down the less CO2 road. Apparently in total this equates to a saving of 715 KG of coal burning and a saving of 1.8 Help with reducing our carbon footprint.

The vision is fuelled by the fear of climate change and the need to find green alternatives to dirty coal, unpopular nuclear power and unreliable gas imports from Russia. Every scrap of waste food, garden trimmings and even sewage would be used to ferment gas. Are we going to burn more oil, natural gas, or (gasp) coal to produce it?

If you build a car as a "kit car" with no real factory, then yes, it will never be an economic success. Denmark did that with Wind Power and now most of their energy comes from wind rather than oil, natural gas, or coal. We should have built more Nuclear power plants and created a nuclear waste recycling program.
