This is due to the 30 to 40 percent increase in emissions EVs create in comparison to manufacturing an ICE vehicle, mainly from its battery production. In states (or countries ) with a high proportion of coal-generated electricity, the miles needed to break-even climb more. That’s especially true if you are a poor urbanite.

But it is a price that must be paid, and GM should be commended for remaining committed to the Volt. That way you have a fair basis of comparison, you know, apples to apples and all that jazz. Not really sure where all the money is going, but it seems like the Volt is already over-priced and under performing.
