In recent weeks, news stories have broken about a Ferrari hybrid supercar in development as well as the launch of the McLaren P11 Supercar, which features a diesel V8 engine and regenerative braking. This means the combustion of hydrogen is only 25 per cent efficient and of course, the carbon in the petrol does not magically disappear.

I certainly believe that in future there will be a much more complex mix of powertrains and fuels; hydrogen will never be as dominant as petrol, and fuel cells never as dominant as combustion engines.
