DOE Awards Cooperative Agreement for $668M Post-Combustion Carbon Capture Project

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded a cooperative agreement to American Electric Power Service Corporation (AEP) for the Mountaineer Commercial Scale Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project to design, construct, and operate a system that will capture and store approximately 1.5 Sequestration of 1.5 miles below the surface.

In order for low-cost electricity from coal-fired power plants to remain available, the DOE said, economical methods for capturing and storing the greenhouse gas emissions from these plants must be developed. Such tagging will better quantify CO 2 monitoring and make it possible to accurately inventory geologically stored carbon.
