Physicists first suspected more than a century ago that the fusing of hydrogen into helium powers the sun. Fission waste by-products need to be disposed of safely, and they remain radioactive for thousands of years. Alternatively, the fusing of the two deuterons could result in a hydrogen-3 nucleus (triton) and a leftover proton.
