There’s also a fair number of used EVs under a year old or as dealer ex-demos with heavy discounts over RRP. Some haven’t proved as popular as hoped ( Mazda MX-30 ) while some owners may have simply decided, in a few months of ownership, that an EV isn’t for them. But there are some. Attention, bargain shoppers.

Mazda’s more premium CX-60 PHEV will be a rival when it lands in early 2023, but its price could nudge $80,000. Safety kit also runs deep. The digital screens look flash, but otherwise it’s a bit devoid of flair and when you dig deeper some of the interior plastics feel cheap. What do I get? Pretty compelling.

General Motor eCrate conversion kits – by late 2021 GM plans to offer battery and motor kits for classic cars, allowing an easy EV conversion. The company has already done plenty of background work (dealer training, charging infrastructure, etc) so it can push the button on the e-Niro later in 2021. Due in 2022.

I think you should buy a Mazda MX-30 Electric … and I’ve not even been drinking. But you can now buy an ex-dealer demo one, typically with just a few thousand kilometres on the clock, from $40,000 drive-away. and, at time of writing, a Queensland dealer has a 2021 MX-30 Electric with 8300km showing for $39,990 drive-away.
