At the time, e-bikes were still rather exotic, at least in the United States, so it seemed worth the expense and effort to build my own. Purpose-built electric bikes and e-bike conversions using hub-motors are now commonplace. That got me thinking, how hard would it be, and how much would it cost, to do a simple conversion now?

Not to be outdone, on Tuesday the Norwegian electric car startup, Think, was in Portland being wooed by the state as one of 8 potential places to site their first car manufacturing facility in the United States. In most conversions cost is about the same because of needless weight.
