A number of startups showed off their porposals to retrofit the existing fleets of petroleum-fueled vehicles, giving some hope to Andy Grove’s ambitoious desire to create millions of plug-in conversions before the automakers deliver. But neither car, GM execs made clear, will appear for sale on a showroom floor for more that two years.

BYD has also begun selling a plug-in electric car with a backup gasoline engine, a move putting it ahead of GM, Nissan, and Toyota. Near the end of our conversation, I ask Wang about the company name. They generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions than cars that burn gasoline, and they have lower fuel costs, even when oil is cheap.

Ted Kulongoski behind the wheel of Nissan’s prototype electric vehicle. At a press event on Monday, Oregon’s governor, Ted Kulongoski, was talking up Nissan’s previously announced partnership with the state. According to Nissan, the company plans to introduce its upcoming electric car in Oregon in late 2010.
