What's most interesting, however, is how easy (and cheap) it is to do a carbon emission-free 200 mile day in a 100 mile range electric vehicle, my 5 year old Toyota RAV4 EV. In a Prius or Civic Hybrid at 50mpg, the trip would have cost about $30 in gas, tolls and parking in Sacto. And I was there representing Plug In America.

The main study shows that under all nine scenarios for both rates of market penetration of PHEVs and the evolving power grids characteristics (capacity/carbon intensity), PHEVs will vastly reduce greenhouse gases for the next 40 years. In some areas where wind and hydropower is wasted at night, the rate can be as low as 2-3 cents per kWh.

Despite this, a 2003 EPRI study , assuming only $2/gallon gas , zero buying incentives, and a PHEV premium of $3-$5,000 more than standard hybrids, shows that the total lifetime cost of ownership for a PHEV will be lower than that of any other vehicle type -- so the payback will be there. How about a car-mounted wind-generator?
