Tesla, VW, BYD, Ford and others have plans to build giant gigafactories. ​Rechargeable sodium-ion batteries are similar in construction to lithium-ion ones. Read the C&EN research here Lithium right now is very expensive and Sodium is quite cheap. The aim is to build batteries at a large scale to reduce prices.
