Using the PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) to Transition Society Seamlessly and Profitably From Fossil Fuel to 100% Renewable Energy

Green Car Congress

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) The PHEV does not require the heavy, costly batteries required by other electric cars, nor does it suffer from a limited range or poor freeway performance. Engineering Advantages of PHEV.

Currently, SCE customers lease or own more than 12,000 plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), both battery electric (BEVs, for about 35%) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs, for about 65%)—about 10% of national EV sales. SCE began its PEV readiness efforts in 2009, and quantified the anticipated impact of PEVs on the electric grid before consumers began buying and leasing them. About 50% of the more than 12,000 PEV owners in SCE territory charge at Level 1. Click to enlarge.

So many automakers are starting to offer people the ‘next-best-thing’: A familiar gas-electric hybrid with rechargeable batteries. Unlike a traditional hybrid, the battery pack in Plug-in Hybrid vehicles can be recharged using a standard 110v plug, or a dedicated 240v charging station. This allows a PHEV to be driven at highway speeds for 10-30 miles, using just electricity.

Infrastructure, recharging and business models. Berkeley will have a higher percentage than Fresno—it will not be unlikely for 3-5 PEVs to show up on one neighborhood circuit in Berkeley, overwhelming the local circuit, and leading to blackouts, he said.
