A ban on all petrol and diesel-powered vehicles made its way through the European Parliament on Tuesday, February 1. The EU formally approved a law that would ban the sale of combustion engine vehicles by 2035 in an attempt to accelerate consumers’ choice of electric powertrains.

Many of the new EU member states with a low ECV market share merely offer an exemption from the annual circulation tax for electric vehicles. Consumers looking for an alternative to diesel now often opt for petrol vehicles or hybrid ones, but aren’t yet making the switch to electrically-chargeable cars on a large scale.

Several European countries, including Italy, Portugal, Slovakia, Bulgaria, and Romania are pushing to delay the EU’s potential ban on combustion engine powertrains in 2035. First, they believe that more time is necessary to establish the infrastructure that will be used for electric vehicles.
