The BMW Group officially commissioned BMW Battery Storage Farm Leipzig, which will connect up to 700 BMW i3 high-capacity batteries. There are currently 500 batteries integrated in the storage farm today, because—only four years after the BMW i3 market launch—most battery packs are still in cars on the road.

Bosch is cooperating with BMW and Vattenfall to explore second-life applications for EV batteries. BMW and Vattenfall has announced the start of a research project on such second-life uses in 2013. The energy will be fed into the energy balancing market to balance out short-term fluctuations in the power grid.

AC Propulsion has delivered an AC Propulsion-powered eBox to the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), where it will be used to evaluate Vehicle to Grid (V2G) operation as part of a research program. With V2G, for example, a fleet of EVs plugged in to the grid could balance the variable ups and downs of power generated from the wind.
