While BEVs were a hot item last month, jumping 81%, to a record 407.000 units, PHEVs were even hooter, shooting 205% in December, allowing them to end the year with 31% of plugin sales, up 5% from the 26% of 2019, giving credit to those that say that PHEVs will still be around for a while. Aston Martin DBX PHEV and EV – electrified versions of AM’s first SUV on the cards. No surprises there are promises of big performance for a PHEV due late in 2022 or early 2023.

And Polestar’s tally of 1524 cars was second best in the premium space, outdoing Volvo (1474), BMW, (1293), Mercedes-Benz (1166) and Mini (455). Of 22,263 medium cars sold – everything from the Mazda6 and Volkswagen Passat to the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class – 57 percent of them were EVs. PHEVs are still tiny in Australia.

Due in the second quarter, the BYD Seal U is available globally as a plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) and a fully electric model. Known as the Lightning Cat overseas, the sleek five-door from Chinese maker GWM is yet to be definitively confirmed for Australia. The Chinese-owned British brand made a big EV impact in 2023 with the excellent MG4.
