Baird’s starting point was an idea for an “electric telescope,” patented in 1885 by German engineer Paul Nipkow. Each line would be encoded as an electrical signal. Nipkow never commercialized his electric telescope, though, and after 15 years the patent expired. This signal was then sent to the receiving system.
