It is also flex so that future biomass fuels such as cellulosic ethanol, methanol can be used (no oil). Also maintenance on these (no oil changes to speak of) etc will cost much less than an internal combution propelled car. Those cars will reduce oil demand at most by about 1/5th of one percent. The hell with the GMs.

The vision is fuelled by the fear of climate change and the need to find green alternatives to dirty coal, unpopular nuclear power and unreliable gas imports from Russia. Oil is the alternative. Are we going to burn more oil, natural gas, or (gasp) coal to produce it? Alternative is no longer an alternative.
