They found that hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles (especially electric cars) easily saved their owners money when looking at the purchase price, fuel costs and regular maintenance. Battery lifespans are still being calculated. Such an experience begs the question, how long do hybrid batteries actually last?

The Corolla Cross Hybrid is yet another extension of the Prius concept across the Toyota lineup. It has the cargo space to fit a dorm’s worth of crap, and I know that it will run damned near forever with the most basic maintenance. Lithium-ion batteries, to be precise. This is an excellent answer.

A Dominion PHEV Prius and hybrid bucket truck. Two Toyota Prius hybrids have been converted with the Hymotion L5 Plug-in Conversion Module from A123Systems. The 5 kWh L5 pack, built with A123Systems’ nanophosphate Li-ion batteries, supports fuel economy of up to 100 mpg for 30-40 miles within the electrically assisted driving range.

This Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) still has all the off-road ability of a non-electrified Grand Cherokee, but when the battery has a charge does so in complete silence. If you don’t plug-in whenever possible, the fuel economy will be in the low 20s mpg. hours to fully recharge the battery.

Toyota long ago made a commitment to hybrids, with the Prius being the most successful result of the company’s commitment to combining electricity and gasoline.
